RESPONSE
-
important

had a cat with Lorenzo after this crit and he pointed out something that has ben at the back of my mind for the last month or so.  I stupidly have been ignoring it but infact it is so importantly correct and neccessary.

When showing my Brownies boards and asking about the image repetition problem he voiced the problem of having a large group of small things but no whole package as a prduct as the impact sum up shot.  That is to say that I had made lots of little things but how would they be distrubuted and used as a product?

So considering I have set myself a deadline of friday to submit my boards it was a matter of hours to produce some packaging.  I had to think fast and in tune with my brief.  This wasn't a time for belly bands.  It had to be something that a 7-11 year old would love and want to take to school with them.  So I decided to further the felt imagery theme and try this... (below).

However, once catching up with Lorenzo to show a quick proposed resolution to the problem, it was said that make sure there is some design in there.  This might be completely and utterly true.  However, I was left a little confused in the way that what is design? If I have been spending the last three months churning out image to solve problems and for branding, where is the line? Because the image is made of material and used on packaging-is that still design?

Another quick mock up made in the hours before boards deadline.  Baring in mind I had to reshoot I was VERY panicked when making this.  However, another completely necessary comment from Lorenzo.  I hadn't pushed it into a product.  However, on reflection and after printing and re photographing-the label was necessary but the barcode wasn't! I forgot the context and forgot that this was a free bee- not a product to be scanned and bought.

However, despite the mocked up paper choice  I think it was important for me to make these changes.  If anything to show myself that it's never too late and its SO important to take these extra steps in products instead of student work.

WRAPPING UP NATIONAL TRUST SILLY WALKS.

A few supplies to less mock ups are made and more real things are produced.

Stock testing and folding trials.

After all of this I think that I should create a backing spread to hold the supplement together and put it in the centre of the paper so I can use my own stock.  Then-using one of these folds I will attach it but with a detachable seal so that the info graphic can be ripped out and taken away.  The freebee can also have its own room in the double page spread so that its not just a free mag in a plastic cover.

ALSO.

I AM MISSING THE TITLE OF THE EVENT ITSELF AS A WHOLE.  Having it's own spread allows me to add in the hand drawn silly walks branding to link it all together and give some consistency to the range!

I COULD BIND IT WITH COLOUR CO ORDINATED THREAD INSTEAD OF A FOLD AND PERFORATED EDGES.  THAT WOULD LOOK SO MUCH NICER.  THIS WOULD ALSO SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF HAVING NO JOIN TO PERFORATE ON AS IT IS A SINGLE PAGE GOING ONTO A DOUBLE SPREAD.

I need to spend some quality time thinking about what format this is going to be folded into etc within the newspaper.  Water proof stock is a necessity-but the scale is also really important.  Walkers want something compact and easily assembled/de assembled.  At the same time they like detail and legibility. I think that a larger scale won;t be a problem but it needs to be compressible.

I think that now I am ready to print I am going to take what I have to the progress crit on thursday and ask for some advice on the format.  I might draw up some ideas of using a wallet(folder) within the newspaper to keep the information and freebee pnocho together as a 'pack'.
I also want some feedback on the poncho.  How can I mock this up to an acceptable standard?  Shall I make tea towels aswell/instead?

Thinking about extras such as the logo and the fact that the document is water proof so that there is no worries about looking at it in the drizzle.

Also, need top start thinking about a map.  It would be nice in matching 3 colour rules.  But how can I do this?

These are some quick unfinished previews of what the reverse of the map would look like when applied to other walks.

This is where I am up to in regards to the information in it's new and improved format.  I like the 3/4 colour version and would like to further this onto the map onto the back of it.  I need to research into waterproof/foldable/nice paper too.

These are finally taking shape.  I have made them a little more screen printing friendly with some more frequently used colours.  I think that the 'scrubby bottoms' design need a bit more work but I need to crack on with the other 4!

After another little studio crit, I decided to push the backing pattern back to bring out the image as it was 'too crowded'.  This now makes the pattern a pattern and not another image. It's also pretty helpful-screen printing wise..

Starting to think about the double page spread. +2

A lonnggg way to go yet! This is just a quick fiddle around with some possible layouts for the spread.  I need to figure out if I actually need it to be double or single? A few elements I like though-eg the introduction of crayon as the titles.

Maybe I could make it more digestible and prettier by having a detached directions sheet.  This is more practical too-to take with them on their walk.

Starting to think about the double page spread.

How will I incorporate Illustration?
A few errors here and there and the smaller red one is NOT a final.  However, I think these are a good representation of what I am doing with this brief as far as the free sample part goes.  I feel happy with these and screen printed I think they will look how I want them too.  Just got to do some seriously complicated layering!

After a mini studio crit-it was mentioned to drop the logo into the pattern so it fits a little better.  I think this is a massive improvement.
